How to get a minister to call you

May 26, 2009 | Written by Will Hardie

A contact of mine sometimes needs to get important issues in front of ministers, but has a hard time competing for their time and attention. She also knows which ministers use Google Alerts to track online references to their names — some are tech-savvy (and/or self-obsessed) enough to do this personally.

The solution — post a helpful but anonymous blog comment including the minister’s name. Reasonably often the minister sees or is shown the comment, and picks up the phone to my contact — who is a go-to person on these issues.

A shifty (but benign) insight into the role and potential of social media in access and influence; and the need to tread carefully in matters of transparency.
